Family law is primarily governed by the laws of the state of Kansas. Child Support Guidelines have been established by the Kansas Supreme Court. Local courts in some areas have adopted guidelines for use in divorce cases. For example, the District Court of Shawnee County, Kansas has adopted the Shawnee County Family Law Guideline for use by attorneys in any divorce or annulment case, or custody and support matters. These guidelines do not have the force and effect of law, but are often times followed by the District Court in determining appropriate resolution and disposition of these types of cases. These guidelines allow the parties to divorce, annulment, custody, and support cases to know in advance how the court might be expected to rule in individual cases, although the circumstances of each case may require a different result than that suggested by the Family Law Guidelines. Other local courts, such as the District Court of Johnson County, Kansas (Olathe, Overland Park, and Kansas City suburbs) and the District Court of Sedgwick County, Kansas (Wichita) have adopted their own family law guidelines, which may differ to some degree from the guidelines adopted by the District Court of Shawnee County, Kansas.
Paul Post primarily restricts his practice from the family law area to the District Court of Shawnee County, Kansas, although on occasion, he does accept cases in nearby counties, including Jackson County, Jefferson County, Pottawatomie County, Wabaunsee County, and Osage County.
